What to bring on an Alaskan Cruise

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

We got to experience our first ever Alaskan Cruise in 2022! Alaska definitely exceeded ALL of our expectations, and we captured memories that would last a lifetime. In this lifetime, though, we will 100% be returning! As Alaskan cruises are definitely different from traveling the Caribbean, we wanted to share our top list of what you should bring on your next Alaskan Cruise.

What to bring on an Alaskan Cruise

Waterproof Shoes

This might be an obvious one, but definitely a necessity! If you do not already own a pair of waterproof shoes, be sure to pick up a comfortable pair before your Alaskan Cruise Vacation. Alaska rains most of the Alaskan Cruise Season so you may find yourself outside walking through puddles or during a light rain. Keep your feet dry with waterproof shoes! If you are purchasing a new pair of shoes for your Alaskan Cruise, be sure to wear them a few times before your trip to break them in!

Rain Coat / Water Resistant Lightweight Jacket

I purchased both myself and Dalton a new water resistant lightweight jacket before our trip - these jackets were life savers! We traveled in August, towards the end of the season so the temperatures were not too low. The jackets served the purpose of keeping us dry, and on cooler days, we layered up more underneath.

Binoculars

It's true -- if you get a balcony cabin and spend time on your balcony throughout the ship, you will probably see wildlife and whales daily on your Alaskan cruise! Having a small set of binoculars in our cabin made spotting whales even more enjoyable. Be sure to bring a pair if you're even the slightest bit interested in having some. The cruise lines do sell them on board, BUT, for a heavy price.

Space Saver - Vacuum Seal Bags

We spent a few days in Seattle before and after our Alaskan cruise. Because of this, we had many clothes, shoes, and layers we were traveling with! We purchased a few vacuum seal bags for packing which was a MAJOR space saver. While taking up less space, they will also aid in separating clean clothes with "used" ones.

Motion Sickness Remedies

The Pacific Ocean can be a little more rough than the Caribbean waters you may have experienced on other cruises. If you are prone to motion sickness, be sure to have remedies packed ahead of time! We recently shared our favorite motion sickness remedies on our blog - check out our full list on our previous blog or our Ultimate Motion Sickness Remedies for Cruise Vacations Amazon list!

Waterproof Backpack

We spent all of our days at port on our feet either on an excursion or exploring the ports. One of our favorite stops was Juneau where we did our own self-guided excursion, climbing up a mountain. If you plan to be off the ship for a large amount of time of your day, be sure to have a backpack to carry all of your things - we brought along snacks, extra socks, a camera, binoculars, and a mini first aid kit for all of our port adventures. Of course, since this is an Alaskan Cruise Checklist, the bag must be waterproof. Check out our Amazon Storefront List - What to Bring on an Alaskan Cruise to see which bag we brought along.
