Norwegian Cruise Line Announces Norwegian Viva's Godparent - Their Newest Ship!

Updated: Jun 28, 2023

Norwegian Viva, Norwegians newest ship scheduled to debut this year, has officially announced the ship's Godparent.

What is a cruise ship Godparent?

It's been a longstanding tradition for cruise lines to name a Godmother for their ships while they are christened. It is an honorable title - many ships have named celebrity women as Godmother, even a cartoon character on the Disney Wonder. Some examples of newer ships christened in the last year are: Norwegian Prima - pop star Katy Perry, Celebrity Beyond - gymnast Simone Biles, Carnival Celebration - Kathie Lee Gifford.

The cruise ship godmother intended to bring good luck and protection to the cruise ship. In the most recent christening ceremonies, the godmother shares a few words wishing the ship good luck and a bottle of champagne is cracked against the hull of the ship.

The Norwegian Viva's Godparent is...Luis Fonsi!

Luis Fonsi is best known for his hit song "Despacito" which earned high rankings accross numerous charts and social media platforms. The song reached the most played song on YouTube with over 8 billion views prior to 2020. We can't wait to watch the Viva christening!

Luis is a Puerto Rican singer - The Norwegian Viva will also conveniently call it's homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico! Sounds like the perfect Godparent if you ask us!

Sailings are set to begin in the Mediterranean this summer. Once Viva completes her first transatlantic crossing, she will be focusing on Caribbean Cruises and Cruises to the Bahamas.

A New Ship Class - The Prima Class

The first ship to join Norwegian Cruise Line's Prima Class was none other than the Norwegian Prima herself. Unlike Norwegian's previous vessels, where ships in their own class have unique hull art, the Prima and Viva appear to have a similar look.

The Prima class was designed and built with a higher ratio of space per passenger compared to Breakaway and Breakaway Plus Class ships for example. This is designed to be a lux model for passengers, giving passengers the most outdoor deck space compared to any other cruise ship.

We were lucky enough to encounter Norwegian Prima in a few destinations - here are our favorite sailaways we've captured from this beautiful cruise ship:

The third and fourth Prima-Class Ships are scheduled to make their debuts in 2025 and 2026. We can't wait to see what Norwegian has in store for these ships!

Why Cruise Norwegian?

We've had the pleasure of cruising on many different cruise lines, and of course Norwegian Cruise Line is one of our favorites. Norwegian provides great ships on a variety of different itineraries - from the Caribbean (Southern Caribbean Cruises, Eastern Caribbean Cruises, Western Caribbean Cruises), to Alaska, and all the way to the Mediterranean. We are confident in choosing a Norwegian Cruise Line ship for any of our future cruise vacations!

Not only is the dining on board unlike any other cruise line, their common areas on the top deck and Waterfront are completely unique in the cruising space!

What do you think of the Norwegian Viva and the Prima Class? We also WANT to know... what do you think the two forthcoming Prima ships will be named? Leave us a comment!
